Ys II is the sequel to the popular action role-playing game Ys. As a result, the game takes place after the events of the first game. The main character, Adol Christin, comes to consciousness and sees a girl who introduces herself as Lilia, and tells him that he is in the land of Ys. However, Dark Fact, the villain of the previous game, has created an evil entity which Adol must stop.

The game plays in an identical fashion to the first game; you move Adol through a top-down perspective, and fight enemies by running into them. However, Ys II adds a magic ability that Adol can use to aid in his quest.

The Famicom version of the game was made by the same companies of the previous Famicom game; it was developed by Advance Communication Company and published by Victor Musical Industries. It suffers from the obvious drops in quality in comparison to the computer versions, as it is running on weaker hardware, but otherwise, manages to be a decent port of the game. While the Famicom version of the game was never released outside of Japan, an unofficial English patch has been made, making the game more accessible to more players.

Music

Unlike the previous game that contained half of the original computer versions' soundtrack and half original music, Ys II for the Famicom borrows its entire soundtrack from the computer versions. In the computer versions, not only did Mieko Ishikawa contribute more songs, but a third composer, Hideya Nagata, also contributed music. The Famicom version has the obvious drop in quality, but still manages to produce decent 8-bit versions of the computer versions' soundtrack. Similar to those versions, the Famicom version lists three sound designers, and is one of the few games Shinji Nakayama is credited in. Similar to the first game, the music is tuned approximately a ¼ step sharp.

The composers wrote the music in the Sound Routine sound driver in 6502 assembly.

Ripping NES music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site.

The game uses the 2A03 of the NES, and uses ACC's Sound Routine driver.
