Takayuki Iwabuchi is an unofficial name of one of the TurboGrafx-16 sound drivers created and used by Hudson Soft. According to personal confirmation from Keita Hoshi, this particular sound driver was programmed by Hudson programmer Takayuki Iwabuchi.

Release History

Version 1

The first game to use the first version of the sound driver was Shanghai, which was only released in Japan in 1987. The other three titles, China Warrior, J.J. & Jeff, and Victory Run were released in both Japan and North America. For this version of the driver, Toshiyuki Sasagawa would take composers' songs and arrange them onto the TurboGrafx-16. He did this on an NEC PC-9801 computer in a custom Music Macro Language.

This particular version of the driver, for an unknown reason, was tuned approximately a ¼ step sharp (about A=450Hz).

Version 2

In or around 1988, Takayuki modified the sound engine with more instruments, one of which is a more realistic-sounding drumkit. According to Keita Hoshi, the drums are modeled after the Simmons electric drumkit The tuning, while still approximately a ¼ step sharp, was changed to sound slightly flatter than the first version of the driver (approximately A=445Hz). It also appears for this particular version of the driver Toshiaki Takimoto arranged composers' music into the driver, based on the credits of games with this version of the sound engine; Yuuyuu Jinsei, The Legendary Axe, Sadakichi Seven: Hideyoshi no Ougon, and Break In. While Takimoto isn't credited for arrangements in The Legendary Axe, we have received verification from June Chikuma that he only served as the game's sound programmer (he is listed under Sound Composer along with Chikuma in the game's credits).

Output

The driver outputs to the TurboGrafx-16's HuC6280. For some reason, the music is tuned a ¼ step sharp. This exact frequency table was also used by Advance Communication Company for their first TurboGrafx-16 title, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones, as well as being used in many of their NES games.
