Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure is one of Apogee's earlier DOS platformers. From a technical standpoint, its EGA graphics and AdLib music wasn't much to behold, but the game is still quite fun and unique in many ways. It's obviously targeted towards younger children. The game is fairly easy, the graphics are bright, and what little violence there is is cartoon violence. There are plenty of bonus items to collect and creepy monsters to destroy by jumping on them, a'la Super Mario Brothers. The gimmick of the game is that you play an young alien with suction cup hands. They allow you to attach yourself to walls and climb them to get to help beat each level and find secret treasures. The main goal of the game is to find Cosmo's parents who appear to have been kidnapped.

Music

Like the game, the music of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure is bright, colorful, and upbeat. Bobby Prince no doubt had a lot of fun with the soundtrack, from the title music, which is a cover of the ZZ Top song "Tush", to the other carefree songs like "Cosmo's Foggy Cosmic Breakdown", and "Da Do Da". The song "Rock It" would later be seen in Major Stryker (DOS). The original music was written in MIDI format in Sequencer Plus Gold and then downgraded to IMF. A couple of the original higher quality MIDI files are included in the rip download.

Bobby Prince had this to say about the soundtrack:

Cosmo is one of the most fun projects I have ever worked on. It seems to be especially loved by women and children. Cosmo is a little green guy with suction cups for hands. He stomps on the various creatures and other things that would cause him harm.

Todd Replogle, the originator of Duke Nukem, was the developer of this project (with some help from Apogee). He gave me free rein to do whatever kind of music I wished (most of the music was composed before the game was playable). I had been itching to do a five string banjo tune, and this one was the result of that itch. The song should be fully playable by a banjo player without any changes. I used a guitar controller (with a banjo tuning) to sequence the song. I am happy that I learned something about the five string, as I needed all the help I could get to put this tune together. The five string banjo is one of the few truly American instruments we have.

(Info)

The type-0 IMF files were extracted from the *.vol files from the root folder using Frenkel Smeijers Textract utility. They were recorded using Winamp and played via the AdPlug 1.8 plugin. A couple of the titles come directly from Bobby Prince, but most of them have been inferred from the names of the ripped files.

The archive also includes MIDI versions of several songs which are remakes arranged by the music's composer Bobby Prince to try and capture the originally intended sound before the FM Synthesis downgrade.
