Dan Schmidt attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and received undergraduate degrees in computer science and music composition.

After school, Schmidt began work with the now defunct Blue Sky Productions (and through its name changes to Looking Glass Technology and Looking Glass Studios). During the 5 years he worked for the company he contributed to the majority of their games writing code for music, AI, and physics, helping with game design, and composing music for some of their titles as well. His most ambitious work with the company was being the project leader for the game Terra Nova.

More recently, Schmidt is in a band called Honest Bob & The Factory-to-Dealer Incentives and works at Harmonix Music Systems, developing music software.
