- For other games in the series, see Ys.
Ys III is the third official installment in the Ys series. The game keeps the same mechanics of the previous two games, though this game plays in an side-view similar to Castlevania, but the gameplay is non-linear.
The game takes place after the events of the previous game, Ys II: Ancient Ys Vanished - The Final Chapter. The main protagonist, Adol Christin's friend Dogi wishes to return to Redmont, hearing about evil lurking there. Adol goes with him to the city to help investigate the evil and to put an end to it.
Like the previous two games, the Famicom version was developed by Advance Communication Company and published by Victor Musical Industries. It suffers from the weaker hardware, but the Famicom version still garnered favorable reviews, with many people citing the gameplay, graphics, and music as positives. While the Famicom version never saw release outside of Japan, an unofficial English patch of the game was made to be more accessible to players outside of Japan. Advance Communication Company would go on to develop the SNES version of this game as well.

Music
Like Ys II, Ys III contains 27 songs, all of which are ported from the original computer versions. The only exception is the Title song, which appears to be an original composition by the ACC sound team, Osamu Kasai, Masaaki Harada, and Michiharu Hasuya. This time, unlike the previous two games, the music plays in the proper tuning, playing at approximately A=440Hz. Of course, there is a drop in quality due to the NES sporting a weaker sound chip than the computer versions, but many have praised the Famicom arrangements. Though Mieko Ishikawa did the music for Ys III, Yuzo Koshiro's Feena and Lucky Treasure Box are also featured in this game.
The composers wrote the music in the Sound Routine sound driver in 6502 assembly. The same three ACC sound staff would later go on to arrange the SNES version's soundtrack.

The credits are displayed during the game's ending. The developer names and roles are written in Japanese hiragana and katakana. As it is customary in Japan, the Japanese credits list their surname first and their given name second.
Game Rip
Ripping NES music is a very arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site.
Audio Devices
The game uses the 2A03 of the NES, and uses ACC's Sound Routine driver.
