Virtua Fighter in Japanese (バーチャファイター - Bāchafaitā), is a port of the fighting game in polygons coming from Sega's Model 1 version, is the first 3D fighting game originally released in Sega arcades, was developed by SEGA-AM2 Co, LTD and distributed by Sega Corp. on the 32-Bit console, the Sega Saturn in 1994 and 1995 for all markets worldwide in all areas.

Virtua Fighter is considered one of the first fighting games with fully 3D environments and characters. The flat polygonal representations of fighters and stages. Unlike many fighting games, Virtua Fighter places more emphasis on gameplay based on realistic fighting styles than on sophisticated moves and absurd plots.

In Virtua Fighter ,there are eight different fighters to choose from and eight different arenas. Each fighter has a unique fighting style as well as individual signature moves.

Technically speaking, this port is excellent and was expertly completed by Sega AM2 under the direction of Sega guru Yu Suzuki, who served as the game's director. Its development for Sega Saturn was in full swing, and its graphics were excellent for the time, having reached a high polygon level. The sound effects, however, are not very clear, but the music has some redeeming qualities. It retains the core elements of the game and has been adapted as much as possible to the console.

This port is the most elaborate and the most complicated to develop on a dual-processor console which at the time was for teams well trained to program on the hardware, but this does not mean that it is bad, on the contrary it received many good reviews from magazines and gaming specialists, to the point that the team is based on this port to launch an official version for the Sega Genesis peripheral of 32 Bits, the 32X.

This game squeezed the Saturn in all the technical qualities which the study Sega AM-2 were the lung of the company to which it carried out to that it was about exporting all its works to this hardware to the maximum of which it offered of if same, an excellent work was done those of the Palm tree, that group was the strongest of Sega creating mythical sagas and as it was the new saga of Virtua Fighter.

Its changes were minimal as the hardware was too powerful than the Model 1 which used a Sega Virtua Processor, a different architecture than the pure 32 Bits hardware, although the 32X was 32 Bits, they were not pure logic processing.

Virtua Fighter struggles to render 3D content on Saturn, with flickering polygons overlapping in peculiar ways (some of which occasionally disappear entirely) and animation issues, including the infamous bug where certain characters' feet point in the wrong direction during their winning poses. The jerky camera is also a carryover from the arcade game, and in some cases it can perform worse than its arcade counterpart.

This title is rare since no more ports of it were seen due to its complicated graphics engine at that time but nowadays only the Arcade and 32X are emulatable, on the other hand the Saturn version takes more power to be executed in a decent way.

Virtua Fighter - SAT - Album Art.jpg

The author of the music was the amazing Takayuki Nakamura (known for several games like Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (GEN), Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (SMS) and the 32X and Arcade version of Virtua Fighter, etc. ), Takenobu Mitsuyoshi and Kazuhiko Kouchi as the ones who developed the adaptations to the console hardware but in CD format for higher quality which changed too much how the original soundtrack was heard in chiptune format.

The music was designed with instruments with these 3 people in charge in the construction and constitution of the characteristic music of the game divided in 18 different tracks between the rounds but very faithful to its arcade version, being a very good adaptation on the console.

The music had an air of Streets of Rage in CD format, this was very characteristic since all the fighters had their own exclusive theme per round and voices per character, but in the Saturn they were of very high quality.

This music is both the same and very different from that of the original arcade, very characteristic of a rudimentary 3D fighting game for the time and technical monster of the Saturn.

Although the disc comes paired with higher quality arranged music inspired by the arcade soundtrack, there is an official soundtrack that is available digitally which can be played via the web.
