The videogame music format stores audio data that is meant to be played on the Texas Instruments SN76489 and SN76496 chips and the Yamaha YM2413, YM2612, and YM2151 chips. By storing the music data and emulating the chips, the sound from any game that used the chips can be emulated.
Here's a breakdown on which systems used which chip:
- SN76489 / SN76496 were used in the Sega Master System, Mark III, SG-1000, SC-3000, Sega Game Gear (with stereo extensions), Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, and BBC Micro.
- YM2413's were used in the Japanese Sega Master System, Mark III, and the MSX-1 with FM-PAC.
- YM2612's were used specifically in the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Genesis.
- YM2151's are found in Capcom CPS-1 arcade games.
VGM files with a VGZ extension have been compressed with the gzip algorithm. However, all VGM files on this site will be compressed with the superior 7Z format in order to save space.
