- This page is for the Ultima III: Exodus song, for more titles see Town.
Towne is the song that plays when you are in one of the many towns scattered across Sosaria including Britain, Grey, Yew, Montor East and West, Moon, Fawn, Devil Guard, Death Gulch, and Dawn.
Ultima 4 also feature songs unofficially titled Towne for the towns of Britannia, but while the titles are the same, the music is different.
Title
The unofficial title Towne was used for this song because of a common theme on the Internet to use this name for the town music in Ultima III and IV. This song is sometimes listed as Towns or Towns and Dwellings. Ken Arnold should be contacted for the official name of this song, failing that, game files should be checked for a proper title.
Games
Ultima III: Exodus (A2)
This is the original version of the song as composed by Ken Arnold. It is rendered on the AY-3-8930 chip of the Mockingboard.
Ultima III: Exodus (A8)
The Atari 8-bit port has comparable music that is used in the same place as the original Apple II release.
Ultima III: Exodus (C64)
When the game was ported to the Commodore 64, the music was arranged for the SID chip, probably by Ken Arnold, but it may have been done by the game's porter, Chuck Bueche. The music functions in the same manner as the Apple II release, but has a "buzzy" sound compared to the original.
There is also a noticeable change in the C64 version of the song. In the original Apple II soundtrack, the song plays about 30 seconds, and then repeats with a slightly higher pitch 30 seconds, before returning to the original pitch. In the Commodore 64 version, the song just repeats the first 30 second section over and over again, never playing the higher-pitch section.
The song is track 2 in the SID file and plays on the 6581.
Ultima III: Exodus (AMI)
The Amiga port features similar music and used in the same places as the original game.
Ultima III: Exodus (AST)
The Atari ST port features similar music and used in the same places as the original game.
Ultima III: Exodus (PC98)
The PC-98 port plays Towne at a noticeably faster tempo than the original. The song is rendered on the YM2203 (OPN) and uses the file name M02.BIN.
Ultima III: Exodus (PC88)
Like the PC-98 port, the PC-88 renders the song on the YM2203, but at a lower quality.
Ultima III: Exodus (GBC)
A bootleg Game Boy Color part was made which includes this song rendered on the APU of the Game Boy's DMG-CPU B.
