- For other games in the series see Thunder Force.
Thunder Force III follows the pattern set by many schumps before it, but offers a couple unique ideas as well. There are the typical machine gun, homing gun, rear gun, and spread guns to power-up to, but unlike most shoot-em-ups, you keep some of your weapons when you die. Thunder Force III also allows you to alter your ship's speed at will instead of painstakingly collecting speed power-ups. The game has the usual stages like fire, ice, and technology, but you can play them in any order you choose. Also, for its time, Thunder Force III was both attractive in graphics and sound.

Music
Thunder Force III has very fitting upbeat music. Each stage and boss has a unique sound set specifically for it. While the usual mechanical sound of the Sega audio chips is present, it's not very distracting since the game is meant to be futuristic. The track titles come from the official soundtrack.
