The Apprentice is a vertical platform game, developed for the Philips CD-i by Dutch company The Vision Factory. They released several games for this console between 1993 and 1997. The Apprentice is the most praised of them all, often described as one of the best games of the CD-i.
This is the story of a week in the life of the wizards apprentice, Marvin. You must successfully complete the tasks set for you by Gandorph S. Wandburner III. This will take you to many different places and you will have to defeat numerous enemies to accomplish your tasks.
Despite its cartoony sprites and catchy music, The Apprentice is a challenging game. There are six levels with three stages each. Each level also have a boss and a bonus stage where you can earn some extra points. Each level has a new weapon for you to use, ranging from the traditional magic wand to a bow or even a water pistol. You can also fly or swim, depending of the level you're at.
A sequel to The Apprentice was planned, but was ultimately canceled after Philips abandoned the CD-i.

Music
All the music was composed by Joost Egmond.
The soundtrack explores several different musical styles throughout the game. For example, the first level is a ragtime, while the third one is pop/rock. Each boss has its own music, using the same instruments or style of the current level's music, but in a more dramatic way.
Since the music is in CD Audio format, songs are not looped and have a proper ending. However, if the music finishes before you have completed the level, the song will start over.
The sound effects of the game were created by another composer, Joris de Man, although he didn't compose any music for The Apprentice.
