Talk:OutRun (ARC)
From Video Game Music Preservation Foundation Wiki
Doing research on OutRun's music led me to this very interesting article. Apparently, the arcade game was shipped with corrupted drum sample ROMs so all the drum samples have a distorted sound to them. For the 20th Anniversary boxset release, Sega actually went back to their archives and obtained the original samples from their source code they wrote in CP/M. As a result, the correct samples are heard in the 20th Anniversary boxset. You can get the fixed sample ROM from that article as well. Should we have a second set of recordings with the correct drum samples as they were originally intended? --SynaMax (talk) 22:24, 19 October 2016 (MDT)
- Here's another article (this time directly from Sega!) that goes into detail about the corrected PCM data and why some of the songs don't loop correctly.--SynaMax (talk) 23:02, 19 October 2016 (MDT)
- Great find SynaMax, this type of stuff is exactly the kind of thing we want in the VGMPF! Not only does it talk about the game's music, but it tells an interesting story about process. Please add some details on the game and song pages and some quotes from that interview. I think we should include a recording of the corrected song, though it should probably be put in the Splash Wave song page, not on the game page itself since the corrected song was never actually part of the game. I wonder if anyone has made a VGM log of the song with the fixed drums and looping? It would be nice to add it the to rip as well. --TheAlmightyGuru (talk) 11:01, 20 October 2016 (MDT)
- Glad I can help, Guru! When I get a chance, I'll add more details to the corresponding pages. As for the VGM logs, looks like these have the correct PCM samples and loop points! vgmrips.net/packs/pack/out-run-arcade--SynaMax (talk) 14:18, 22 October 2016 (MDT)
