Takayuki Hirono (NES Driver) is an unofficial name of the sound driver used in all NES, Famicom, and Famicom Disk System games that were developed by Compile. As the name suggests, the driver was programmed by Takayuki "Jemini" Hirono, who also programmed sound drivers for many other consoles.
To create music for the driver, composers would write in assembly code on an MSX computer.
Release History
The first game to use the sound driver was Lunar Pool, which was released in both Japan and North America. The last game to use the driver was the Famicom version of Puyo Puyo, released as late as 1993, and was only available in Japan.
Output
The driver outputs to the RP2A03. The two Famicom Disk System games that used the driver (Puyo Puyo and Zanac) do not take advantage of the FDS's RP2C33. However, Puyo Puyo uses digitized drum samples for the DPCM channel.
