Steve Turner started programming at age 15. After attending an early TOPS course, he joined the Civil Service, originally as a Clerical Assistant, but became a programmer. However, he was unhappy with the job and left afterwards. He later got a job programming on mainframe computers for an insurance company. He eventually got a ZX80, but didn't end up programming games for it due to its decrease in popularity. He later bought and programmed on a ZX Spectrum, and after Hewson Consultants offered him a job, he started writing video games and software.
In 1983, he founded Graftgold, a company which focused on computer games. He also composed music, sound effects, and programmed sound engines for the company, mainly for the Amstrad CPC and Sega Game Gear/Master System. He programmed a few 3D games before inviting Andrew Braybrook to work for the company, as he had too much work to deal with. Although Turner left Hewson, the two companies worked closely together, with Hewson publishing many titles for the company.
