In Spy Hunter you play a spy racing down the road in his ultra-fast sports car. You're trying to get away from a bunch villainous drivers of cars like the Tire-Slasher and the Bulletproof Bully. Your car is equipped with machine guns and can be fitted with neat spy-gadgets like oil slicks and smokescreens. Every few miles there is a fork in the road which sends you down different roads including the desert, the coast, the woods, even snow-covered roads! Later in the game you can also hop into a speed boat and cruise along a river.

Although the game has an interesting theme, the initial excitement wares off pretty quickly and the becomes boring. The roads are repetitive, there's only a small variety of enemies, and without an ending, your only goal becomes surpassing your previous high score. Even if you're able to get to the speedboat section of the game, you'll find the enemies are incredibly difficult and you don't get any new spy-gadgets, thus making it pointless to play.

As far as the port is concerned, it wasn't possible for Nintendo to have the realism of the arcade cabinet's steering wheel, gas peddle, and a gear shift, but it does accurately keep the look and feel of the original.

Music

The soundtrack of the NES port uses the same song as the original arcade release. The game only features a single tune, the "Peter Gunn Theme", originally performed by the Henry Mancini Orchestra, and licensed from the TV series. However, the tune is fairly long with some cool sounding solos. While Bob Libbe, Neil Falconer and Michael Bartlow worked on the arcade version's music. According to the programmer Hiroaki Higashiya, Naoki Kodaka did the music conversion.
