San Goku Shi II is a soundtrack CD released exclusively in Japan in 1989. It contains live arrangements and performances of the various versions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms II (known as San Goku Shi II in Japan). It is one of the many soundtrack CDs in Koei's Soundware collection. All of the songs were composed and arranged by then-keyboardist of the band Casiopea, Minoru Mukaiya.
This was Mukaiya's first video game that he ever worked on. According to Mukaiya, he was excited to work on the project, as he enjoyed video games. He said that he was trying to write music from the player's point of view, and that it was interesting to him, as this time around, he was working on the receiving end, as creating music for the game. Mukaiya states that he wanted to get the Chinese/Asian feel of the music by using the pentatonic scale for most of the songs.
The album was recorded in Japan, but some parts were also recorded in Thailand. Mukaiya originally wanted to record in China instead, but because it was difficult to record there, he settled on Thailand, which is greatly influenced by China. Mukaiya also said during the creation of this soundtrack CD, his master tapes were halted by customs, and he was forced to pay a fee.
The booklet also contains liner notes for each song, as well as an interview with Minoru Mukaiya with Koei about the game's soundtrack.
