The SNES Music and Sound Generator was a sound driver for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, programmed by Jason Andersen and John Schappert of Visual Concepts and used in their games. However, they would license the sound driver to other developers.
According to Jason, the instruments were created by the composers who used the sound driver. They would create sample loops in a program written in C. The composers could also write MIDI files which would be converted to the driver.
