SEGA Music Development System is a Mega Drive sound system programmed and designed by Artech Studios (possibly by Paul Butler, founder, game designer and composer of Artech). Commissioned by Sega of America, it was one of the very first Western-developed sound drivers for the system. This sound driver was first used in Dark Castle (GEN) and unofficially known, as precursor of GEMS.

David Javelosa noted that the tool was "too inconvenient to be widely used".

Output

This sound driver supports the Yamaha YM2612 and Texas Instruments' SN76489 sound chips.
