Quake II - N64 - North and Central America.jpg
Platform: Nintendo 64
Year: 1999
Developer: id Software, Raster Productions.
This page is for the Nintendo 64 version game. For other games in the series, see Quake.

Quake II 64 is a port of the PlayStation version for Nintendo 64 by Raster Productions, licensed by id Software and distributed by Activision Publishing in 1999 for America, Europe and Oceania without release for Japan. This port is very strange compared to the CD version on PlayStation, very strange aspects to what Midway Games and Williams Entertainment did in the ports that released on the console of Sony.

This is a very rare case, this port underwent many changes to adapt to the console, the first thing is lost the original soundtrack being changed by an environmental as suspense or terror with an atmosphere as dark with the futuristic aspect that had the original Quake II. The strange thing is the maps, the order is not the one that followed in PlayStation, Another is the graphic aspect which reduced the resolution of the textures so that it enters a cartridge of 16 MB maximum which looks somewhat strange.

In the rest it remained unchanged, such as the enemies, the ambient sounds, that if the atmosphere of the game was converted almost to what was "Doom" of PlayStation. This lost meaning as in this game and with these changes ran very regularly with drop of 25 FPS not stable, which was not known if these rare changes would have effects on the performance it had on the console of Nintendo.

Activision it is not known why the developer changed from Hammerhead (who made the PlayStation port) to Raster Productions, it is believed is because of the experience of how they adapt such a game on a console that used as a medium the highly acclaimed cartridges offered by the great N.

The good thing is how I take the criticism, it was very positive about it but there was something that made this port not lose its difference from other versions, which is very strange that so many ports of Quake 64, Hexen 64 and the game of Doom 64 acquired the characteristic of changing the music for a suspense, terror and environmental origin, will be to follow a tradition of the games of id Software?.

One thing as a plus, this game offered new mechanics, multiplayer mode to 4, graphical changes, possibility to use Rumble and Memory Packs and even the RAM booster of Nintendo 64. This port was very good for several aspects but what shocks is the music which could not even adapt to the console which is a shame for this technical miracle.

Aubrey Hodges under the pseudonym of Ken "Razor" Richmond, was the creator of the new soundtrack of the exclusive version of Nintendo 64, who was the one who made the famous soundtrack of the original Quake II to a type of ambient soundtrack of suspense, anguish and terror. This type of music was inherited from the ports that made the games of id Software, it is a classic of this author to make this type of ambient music which is very good and excellently when the atmosphere of the game is done together.

Although the limitations of the Nintendo 64 cartridges did not make the musical atmosphere disappear if it was not replaced with the tradition of ambient music from the Nintendo 64 games on this console.

The music doesn't even look like the one in Doom 64 or the previous sequel to Quake. It was very different, it brought a very interesting atmosphere royo futuristic type with which he acquired this game that is his main strength in this console.

This soundtrack would be re-released with Quake 64 in 2013 by Hodges as a special version only digitally. It would bring a little different style with compatibility to stereo in high quality AAC format, which is compatible in several digital platforms.

The credits are only available in the manual, at the end of the manual (the source is missing).

Something to highlight Mr. Ken Richmond is Aubrey Hodges the person who worked on several games of id Software, he worked under that alias originally with the development team of Raster Productions by direct contract by Activision.

These recordings were made by GatoVerde95 using GHex and Rosalie´s Mupen GUI to extract files, foobar2000 to add metadata and to convert to OGG format. Make List was used to encode the recordings in the list.
