Platform: Nintendo DS
Year: 2004
Developer: Sonic Team, Milestone Inc.

Puyo Pop Fever (Puyo Puyo Fever in Japan) is a port of the falling-blocks puzzle game of the same name, first released in arcades. Like its many other versions, the DS game revolves around stacking groups of blobs called "Puyos" - when four of the same color connect (vertically or horizontally), they are removed from the board. The ideal method of dealing with them is to plan ahead and set them up to cause chain reactions, as this will cause one's opponent to receive increasingly large amounts of "nuisance" Puyos that clog up their board. The new, titular "fever" mechanic adds to this as well - under certain conditions, the player will receive a series of pre-made chains that they have to capitalize on, potentially leading to a comeback from a sticky situation. In addition, different characters have different "drop sets" that determine the Puyo patterns they receive, ranging from pairs to groups of 3 or 4.

Being on a handheld with less storage than contemporary consoles, Puyo Pop Fever has to cut down on parts of the game's aesthetic. Among other things, the 3D Puyos are replaced with simpler 2D sprites. However, unlike the even more stripped-down GBA port, the DS version manages to include all the original voice acting (albeit compressed). It also adds touch screen support in various places, such as the menus and certain cutscenes.

Music

As with every other version of the game, Puyo Pop Fever's music is consistently energetic, frequently being light and upbeat in tone as well. The DS port represents a middle ground between the original, full-quality soundtrack and the highly-compressed Game Boy Advance version - while every song is rearranged for the device's sound hardware (and consequently going from audio recordings to sequenced music), their fidelity to the source is significantly higher. Songs that lost instruments or were otherwise altered on the GBA do not suffer from the same compromises here.

Recording

Aside from "Test (Unused)," every track name comes from the official English translations used in Puyo Puyo Fever 1&2 Soundtrack.

Credits

(Sources: Credits, Puyo Puyo Tsuu DX. Complete Best Album 2 booklet, pg. 17)

The credits are displayed after beating the "WakuWaku" and "HaraHara" courses - the text is the same in both cases. Since they are identical to those used in every other version of the game, it is possible that someone at Milestone went uncredited for arranging Abe's compositions. However, since there is no known, concrete information about this available, Abe is credited as arranger here as well.

"Puyo Puyo All Night Fight!" is an arrangement of "It's a Face-Off at the Magic Tower! ~ Beginning Music" from Puyo Puyo 2 (SMD). According to the booklet included with Puyo Puyo Tsuu DX. Complete Best Album 2, the song was composed solely by Tsuyoshi Matsushima.
