Perfect Chessmate is a Chess game developed by Gunnar Games and published by Expert Software.

The game has many modes, so it's hard to know where to start. You create an avatar and can play against several AI opponents. There are many AI opponents to choose from or the player can create one from scratch. Each AI opponent has their own backstory, as well as their stats being listed. During normal play, the player can perform all types of actions such as go back a move, pause the game, offer a truce (which the CPU always declines), or resign. The player can also turn on hints for the game where the board lights up in different colors, each color representing different things such as yellow squares being valid moves for the current piece, or red squares where a piece may be captured. If the player is confident enough, they can play a Rated Game, where the player can take on an AI opponent. This mode removes all helpful features and is played like a real-time chess game. If the player wins, their rating score goes up, but if they lose, they lose a significant amount of points. The player can also play with another human player over the internet, but this feature is obsolete by now.

The player can choose several different-themed chessboards. Most are in 3D, but a couple are in 2D for those who wish to play with a simpler interface, as some of the pieces blend in with each other in the 3D environments. The game also has narration; by default, it only narrates when a piece is captured or when there is a castle-king/queen side, but if can be reprogrammed to narrate moves as well, or can be turned off entirely. Sound effects are minimal; the only sound effects you'll hear is the click sound when navigating the various menus and buttons, and whenever a piece is moved on the board.

Music

The game features ten classical music pieces which were arranged by Steve Newton. Each piece of music is about a few minutes long, though the track Trio Sonata Opus3 #2 is nearly six minutes long. Each song is relaxing to listen to, though one may argue that Mazurka in B flat Opus 7, while the catchiest tune, is probably the most energetic. Under the game's audio options, the player can choose to either loop a single track, play through all ten songs, or turn off music. The game even supports audio CDs. The MIDI Selection screen lists the names of all the songs.

To make the music, Steven used Cakewalk for Windows.
