Naoto Ishida graduated from the Department of Sound Design at Kyushu University. In 1988, he started work at Nintendo as a sound engineer. He was also one of the designers of the SNES sound chip, the S-SMP. He was also involved with the analog circuits of some platforms.

While Ishida primarily worked as a sound designer and programmer, he also composed some music for the company, and is probably best known for composing the music to F-Zero, one of the launch titles for the SNES, as well as the Super Game Boy. In F-Zero, he composed the music for Big Blue, which is one of the most popular songs in the series.

Sometime during 2001, or possibly later, Ishida left Nintendo to work for Sony (who created the S-SMP). He no longer works on video games, and instead performs various duties including management.
