This page is for the Sega 18 version. For other games in the series, see Moonwalker.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker in Japanese (マイケル ジャクソンズ ムーンウォーカー Maikeru Jakusonzu Mūnwōkā) is a dance type fixed-view platformer game was the First to be developed, developed and distributed by Sega for the arcade board Sega System 18 in 1990 for the Japanese and US market.

This saga tells the same story of Moonwalker: The Movie starring pop artist of the moment Michael Jackson, only from a gameplay perspective. The story, which is taken from the movie, follows Michael Jackson, using music and dance with various related skills, on a quest to save kidnapped children from the hands of the evil "Mr. Big".

This adaptation has many aspects that could not be transferred to home consoles and home computers, it has more than 10 animations per object, the music is powered by 2 sound chips, very good graphics, mechanics and controls very well done.

It received many positive reviews, the same happened with the home console versions such as Sega Master System and Sega Genesis/Mega-Drive, which were good demakes but not on computers, being a disastrous demake.

This version only served as a base for the domestic versions distributed on cartridges.

Tohru Nakabayashi was the character in charge of constructing the original chip tune music for the game, it was built from scratch but the original scores were provided by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson although it is strange that he has not been credited.

This version included the most important songs such as Billie Jean, Smooth Criminal, Another Part of Me, Beat It and Bad, which were played thanks to the 3 sound chips available on the Sega arcade hardware.

The music was almost faithful to the original but voices, dance attacks were added but they were with the Smooth Criminal song as base, the domestic versions changed this depending on the song and the level.

As this was by Rounds it was made that some tracks were repeated almost 2 Rounds and including 1 new created by Nakabayashi, the soundtrack consists of 22 several are temporary sounds and as 7 are songs.

Credits

(Verification from Sega staff; Game lacks credits.)

At the end of the game, you are given a list of songs that appear in the game, but no credits. We reached out to Hiroshi Kubota who did the Genesis version of the game. According to Kubota, the arcade version arrangements were done by Nakabayashi. It is also rumored that when Nakabayashi went to Sega's American headquarters, he got to meet Jackson himself.

These recordings were made by GatoVerde95 using foobar2000 to add Metadata and convert the music from VGZ to FLAC, as an additional tool Make List was used to encode the recordings in list mode.

Audio Devices

The game uses two RF5C68 chips and a YM3438. These made up the sound part of the System 18 of which the YM3438 was duplicated while the Ricoh RF5C68 had only one.
