Master of Darkness is a platform action game with a horror theme, designed to mimic the style of Castlevania (NES). You play the role of Dr. Social, a psychologist who has learned about various terrors of London from his Ouija board. Your first mission is to track Jack the Ripper along the banks of the River Thames at night. You must battle through his minions collecting various weapons like knives, swords, pistols, and bombs. Upon confronting Jack, you find that Count Dracula is behind it all, and play continues at the wax works shop where the statues come to life!

This game was probably developed in tandem with the Game Gear port as they share a lot of graphics and have identical music. However, the Master System port was only released in PAL regions. The game was also released for the Wii, but it is just an emulated version of the game.

Music

The soundtrack of Master of Darkness was composed by Takashi Horiguchi and Yoko Wada. Like the rest of the game, the music bears obvious similarities to songs of Castlevania. The music has an ominous and sinister feel to it.

Some sites incorrectly attribute the music to Sega composer, Fumie Kumatani since her name is so similar to the alias "Fumi," but Kumatani didn't start working for Sega until 1996, four years after Master of Darkness was released.

The recording was made using Game Emu Player v1.195 in foobar2000.
