Music
The music of SSS is distributed among three different media. Background music during gameplay is stored as sequence files which are synthesized by the PlayStation's SPU. Vocal tracks that appear in specific locations during gameplay, e.g. BGM for in-game cutscenes, are stored in XA digital audio files, along with all the game's sound effects. Finally, cinematic audio and video are stored in standard PlayStation STR files. XA and STR tracks are readily identifiable as they feature a distinctive 37.8 KHz sampling rate.
Track names are derived from several sources. All but one sequence file, plus one XA track, are featured in an in-game track list, though it's noteworthy that for many tracks there are tangible differences in the Japanese and English names; there is additionally an incomplete soundtrack CD featuring a mix of SSS and The Silver Star tracks. Most names are taken from the English in-game list, with a couple changed in minor ways to fix translation or grammatical errors. A couple non-sequence tracks' names come from the soundtrack, while others are made up in the absence of any official name.
The soundtrack features three tracks which are not used in game. Unknown and Relax are sequence tracks that are not used, although Relax has an entry in the in-game track list. The third track is the sole CD audio track for the game, and is a high-quality version of the XA track Thoughts Far Away, a track which itself is noteworthy as the only non-sequence track to appear in the in-game track list.
Recording
The recording features all sequence tracks, all XA music tracks, and what music could be cleanly extracted from the cinematics sans voiceovers and sound effects. Sequence files were ripped to PSF and recorded using Highly Experimental, while XA and STR files were extracted using PsxMC.
