King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella is a graphical adventure game, and the fourth in the King's Quest series. You play the part of Princess Rosella, daughter of King Graham, who has had a terrible heart attack. The fairy Genesta offers to transport you to the land of Tamir where you can find a magical fruit to save the king's life, but in order to send you back, you must return her talisman which was stolen by the evil Lolotte. You do this by walking about the land of Tamir and typing commands like "knock on the door," and, "talk to fisherman," in order to solve puzzles and avoid hazards.
There are multiple versions of King's Quest 4. The game was made both using Sierra's AGI and SCI engines, but even the SCI release had multiple versions over the years with noticeably different artwork.

King's Quest 4 was a milestone for the PC gaming world because up until this point, no major PC game studio had utilized the new generation of computer sound devices. The IBM and it compatibles mostly utilized the awful PC Speaker, or at best the PCjr 3 Voice, but these were embarrassing compared to the Commodore's SID chip, or Nintendo's RP2A03. Sierra broke ground, not only by utilizing all of the most recent audio devices, but also for hiring a professional musician, film composer William Goldstein, to score their game. This allowed King's Quest 4 to have one of the most extravagant soundtracks of the PC world at the time. Goldstein scored the game much like a movie, giving various characters their own leitmotifs and using crescendos to climax a theme.
A couple of songs are slightly different in the various versions of the SCI release. This soundtrack represents the latest release of the game. Also, since the game was released to support several different audio devices, different recordings will be made of each.
Recording
1 for MT-32, 2 for AdLib, 3 for PC Music Feature, 4 of Tandy 3 Voice and 5 for PC Speaker. Currently, only the Roland MT-32 soundtrack has been recorded.

The SCI and PATCH files are compressed throughout the various resource files and were were extracted using the command line version of Sierra Viewer v1.0. There are two versions of the extracted files corresponding to different versions of the game. Minor changes to the music occur between the two versions.
The Roland MT-32 recording was made using the GUI version of SCI Viewer v1.0.

Like the game itself, the audio setup changed over time. The program was upgraded, newer devices were added in the later version while older devices were dropped. Despite the game supporting 11 audio devices, there are only five different output types. The Roland output was shared between the MT-32, MT-100, LAPC-I, CM-32L, and CM-64. Yamaha output was used by the PC Music Feature, OPL output was shared between the AdLib and Sound Blaster, 3 voice was shared between the Tandy and PC Jr, and the last output was used by the PC speaker.
