Year: 1994
Developer: Philips Fantasy Factory
For other games in the series, see Super Mario Bros.

Hotel Mario is a single-screen platformer. Bowser takes over the Mushroom Kingdom, hides the princess in one of the seven hotels that he claimed there and the plumber duo is once again tasked to save her by going through all of these.

Each stage involves shutting a certain amount of doors while pouncing enemies along the way that try to prevent them from staying closed, all without exceeding the time limit. Moving between the five storeys can be done by taking elevators using the Up and Down buttons in order to hide from enemies and avoid taking damage. Even though the level design and the visual atmosphere vary throughout the game, the gameplay remains exactly the same.

This and the unreleased Super Mario's Wacky Worlds (CDI) were developed by Philips after they acquired the rights to use Nintendo's licensed characters as a result of an experimental partnership for a cancelled SNES CD add-on, which also led to the creation of three Zelda-themed titles. All these are not particularly liked among the fans (and even Nintendo themselves), most often citing the poor voice acting and crudely animated graphics.

The actual game doesn't seem to look that bad.

Music

The music is one of the least infamous aspects of Hotel Mario. Each hotel features its own BGMs which change every three or four stages, mostly with just minor adjustments like added drums. There are also two longer variations of the second and fifth Stage Clear fanfares that appear to be unused. The title and ending themes are often considered to be original compositions, but are actually renditions of Max Steiner's Polka Medley used in the 1933 film Little Women. While the French and international releases share almost identical audio data, the former has dubbed cutscenes and what appears to be a bug causing some songs to play quieter than the other ones.

According to St. Regis, he had to write the game's music as MIDI files on a Mac OS 7 with Opcode Studio Vision using these synths:

Studio Electronics Obie Rack, Yamaha TG-100, Roland S770 (custom and stock samples), MKS-20, MKS-50, Casio CZ-100, MT-40 (customized).

Credits

(Sources: ending sequence, manual (English, French), verification from St. Regis)

The credits are accessible after registering a name on the high score table and upon beating the game. They can also be seen in the instruction manual. Although Levy is listed as the composer, St. Regis proved this to be misleading in his comment of an unnofficial soundtrack upload.

That’s because my good friend Jack Levy took all the credit for my work–something I just found out recently. He did assist with sound design, and production assistance, However I, Marc St. Regis, am the composer and performer.

St. Regis said that Levy only co-produced the alternate versions of the songs, but didn't compose anything.

As mentioned above, the French release features completely different voice actors, but still lists the same ones as the other versions.
