FamiTracker is an open source audio tracker program for Windows designed to faithfully emulate the audio chips used on various NES games including the RP2A03, RP2C33, MMC5, VRC VI, VRC VII, and NAMCO163. Future development will include the Sunsoft 5B chip. FamiTracker supports many helpful features to expedite the composition process including the ability to import MIDI files and make custom instruments. The user can also export their music into a variety of formats including NSF files, BIN files, PRG files, and even NES files to play back on a real NES or emulator. According to the program's creator Jonathan Liss, FamiTracker's design was based off of MadTracker.
Instrument creation is GUI-based and the user can create custom instrument envelopes and also configure arpeggios, pitch bends, and the duty cycle of the instrument.
Third-party programmers have added development to the project and there are unofficial add-ons for making ASM6 files and for importing NSF files into the tracker's native FTM format.
Unfortunately, some of the features found in the various NES sound chips are not, and will not be, supported by FamiTracker, such as hardware decay instruments, which were used in many Nintendo games. Despite this, composers have been able to make cover songs that sound practically indistinguishable from their original NES soundtrack.
