Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC) is a lossless audio codec belonging to the Vorbis family of open-source patent-free media formats. It was mainly developed and authored by Josh Coalson and Ed Whitney. The compression algorithm is targeted towards audio data so it compresses better than generic compression formats like Zip.

Games don't generally use FLAC format for storing audio because of the large file size, and lack of APIs. The format is included here because editors are encouraged to keep a lossless compressed copy of their audio recordings, and FLAC is the superior choice.
