Escape from New York is an action movie written, directed and scored primarily by John Carpenter, starring Kurt Russell, and produced by Debra Hill († March 2005).
Manhattan Island has been turned into a maximum security prison, completely surrounded by mines and 50-foot walls. The guards are outside, letting the prisoners create their own world. For example, the cannibalistic Crazies drag people underground. Protagonist Snake Plissken is about to be imprisoned, but can get free if he fulfills a task within given time (details in movie, not the games). He lands a plane on a small roof, meets different groups of prisoners, dodges mines left and right on the bridge that leads to the walls, and sees the final seconds on his wristwatch.
The movie became a cult classic, but got bad luck with video games. The only two released ones were obviously made by fans for a laugh.

On 2003-07-31, Namco announced a video game for Christmas 2005, with Carpenter, Russell and Hill eagerly contributing. However, the game was cancelled and its website vanished after Hill's death. Whether both events were related is unconfirmed.
Artist Mike Kennedy posted an internal video on 2013-09-02 and listed the platforms on his résumé.
