Music

Music plays only at the end of a game, either bleak or gleeful. Before that, you will hear 3 to 5 digitized sound effects that sound like sampled from a synthesizer.

The irregular note lengths suggest that the notes were input in real-time on a QWERTY or MIDI keyboard. Each sound effect includes the ISFT text "Cool Edit v.1.05 by David Johnston".

The bleak song was used in a 1999 unstable homebrew, Annihilator (W32).

Recordings

Both jingles were recorded from the game:

  1. on a real Pentium 60 MHz with Windows 3.1, a Sound Blaster 16 CT1740, and the default "Ad Lib" setup. This setup is illustrated in Shadoware's next game, The Greens (W16).

They may also be recorded from other popular setups of the day. However, they will replace every drum with a single piano key.

(No source. Both songs are currently titled after their occurrences. Shadoware should be asked for official titles.)

Credits

(No source. Clicking About shows the text "Concept and Development by Ken Foster und Sam C. Misemer". Dominate has no further credits, but The Greens (W16) suggests that Foster and/or Misemer may have composed all audio themselves.)

(Info)

Each song resides openly in the game's directory. The sound effects and their names were extracted from the dominate.exe file.

Audio Devices

Music and sound effects play through MMSYSTEM.DLL. Both songs trigger the compatibility warning.

According to Dominate's file_id.diz, the game requires Windows 3.1, but judging by the EXE header, it may also work under Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions.

Releases

The only known release is shareware. The manuals say June 1993, but the game and song files say 1993-07-22. It is unconfirmed whether registering brings new audio.
