Dare to Dream Volume 3 or Part Three, subtitled Christian's Lair is a dark point-and-click adventure.

You are Tyler, a 10-year-old boy. In the previous volume, you materialized in your own mind and wandered through happy thoughts. In search of an exit, you encountered the NiteMare, an evil land based on your fears, the biggest one being death.

Music

Most songs convey dark feelings such as spooky, depressing, and hostile, even imitating heartbeats and helicopters. A few give small glimmers of mystery, comfort, or hope.

A sound effect clicks when you switch room, click the Talk button, or help Solomon. The music pauses while the picture is minimized or the Help! or Talk dialog is shown.

Allen used WinJammer. Irregular note lengths suggest that he performed on a QWERTY or MIDI keyboard. Since Windows does not easily loop MIDI files, Allen copy-pasted most scores to loop two, four or more times before stopping by themselves. The actual game and sound effect were programmed using Visual Basic 1.0.

Recording

All songs were recorded from the game:

  1. on a real Pentium 60 MHz with Windows 3.1, a Sound Blaster 16 CT1740, and the "Ad Lib general" setup.

The VGMPF fades the third loop out within 10 seconds.

While Microsoft's Ad Lib driver has several bugs, it probably is what Allen arranged on, because it is the only one where some patterns are audible, particularly the melodies starting at 0:25 of track 203, and 0:32 and 1:52 of 224. Other setups common about 1993 may still be recorded, but with track numbers 301–325, even if they sound better.

As an exception, the game does suggest to map just the drums to a non-AdLib driver, such as Sound Blaster Pro or MT-32. Allen had arranged for the MT-32 before, and the drums are compatible, so a such setup can be recorded with track numbers 101, 118, 103, 120, 124, and 125. The other four songs do not have drums.

(Info)

Each song resides openly in the game's directory. The sound effect and its label, sfx1, are hard-coded in the d2d3.exe file.

Audio Devices

By default, music is off. The setup is saved as d2dsound.ini, but only takes effect when d2d3.exe starts.

Music plays through MMSYSTEM.DLL and altogether uses MIDI channels 1–5 and 10. All except track 18 trigger the compatibility warning.

The sound effect plays through SOUND.DRV, which defaults to the PC Speaker.
