Developer: Ocean

Daley Thompson's Star Events is a sports game. It looks like a port of Daley Thompson's Decathlon (C64) with appropriately bright colors, body sizes, only one player, and 7 events (too few for decathlon). Uniquely to this port, one event is 200 metres hurdles (rare in reality).

As usual, all events are spread over two days. Either day has to be loaded separately and is designed very differently:

  1. 18 seconds after loading, the first event starts automatically. Each event runs once in a row. If you don't qualify, you still get to the next event but lose one of three "lives". After all are out, an attract mode with looping theme song and "game over" message appears.
  2. After loading, an attract mode with the same song appears. Each event runs three times in a row. If you don't qualify one time, you're back to attract mode. You can switch between keyboard and joystick anytime.

Music

Ocean had just promoted Martin Galway from freelance to full-time, and as he confirmed in 2012, this soundtrack may have been his very first task since. In the 1990s, he thought it was Roland's Ratrace (C64), but from comparing both drivers, Daley came just before Roland.

Despite being probably Galway's only work for the 2-voice TED chip, it demonstrates both its limits and possibilities to overcome them. For example, both voices must share one volume, but internally, Galway's driver lets each voice have its own volume, even modulated using ADSR, and outputs only the higher volume to the chip.

Three sound effects are for qualified, foul, and step (at random pitch).

Recording

To record, the game was played in VICE 3.2 with C16 PAL.
