Brix is a variant of Puzznic, started by a bored German student (Michael Riedel, not to be confused with the American programmer) and significantly updated in collaboration with Epic Games.

Games

Brix

This installment is a near-identical clone of Puzznic (AMI) and self-documented as public domain.

It is easily recognized by its in-game background (a red brick wall) and menu (no cursor, but keys). Sound effects come from the PC Speaker only.

Brix 1

According to an old fansite, Riedel's friend Jürgen Egeling had already localized Overkill (DOS) for Epic Games and knew they would like Brix. It is this installment that added new gameplay elements.

Dan Froelich composed three songs, and founder Tim Sweeney gave technical support. The Sound Blaster drivers are the same as in Sweeney's early versions of Jill of the Jungle.

Confusingly, everybody went with a slightly different name. Epic's HELPME.DOC alone switches between Brix, Brix 1, and Brix I.

Brix 2 Deluxe

The deluxe version mainly added seven songs and a level editor. One of the songs later reappeared in Solar Winds (DOS).

Brix 3 Superlogic

Sold by a German coffee chain (Tchibo Frisch-Röst Kaffee), this installment supports only 56 levels, four backgrounds, and four songs. The levels and menu background are unique, but the rest matches Brix 2.

BrixMas

Dated January 1995, Joystick N°56 advertised a version with Christmas graphics. The name "BrixMas" is also hidden (as a leftover) inside Brix 4 and a 1996 re-release of Brix 1.

Brix 4 Genius

Also from Tchibo: 112 new levels, one song from Brix 3, and two changed sound effects: The game-over laugh now also plays for your time bonus, and the original bonus sound effect plays in place of the hi-score applause.

Curiously, the credit for Froelich's song reads Jogi and is physically separated from Epic. JogiArts scored Mad Mac (DOS), but does not sound much like Froelich. Brix 4 and Mad Mac do share the CMF format, publisher, and minor extra work from Riedel.
