Type: | Compressed File |
Extension: | *.bz2 |
bzip2 is an open-source patent-free compressed file format created by Julian Seward. It uses the Burrows–Wheeler algorithm and works only on a single file rather than a collection of files. When it is desired to use bzip2 to compress a collection of files, they are usually first combined in a tarball (TAR) file and then compressed, leading to the common *.tar.bz2 extension. This format is popular among UNIX and LINUX users.
Software
Reason For Inclusion
Audio rips and software downloads in the VGMPF from a UNIX-like operating system use this format.
