Avenging Spirit in Japanese (ファンタズム - Phantasm) is an action-adventure platformer developed by C.P. Brain, licensed and published by Jaleco from its arcade version for Game Boy in 1992 in different regions of the world.
In the game, players assume the role of a ghost who seeks to avenge his own death and rescue his kidnapped girlfriend. The protagonist, a young man named Michael, is killed by a group of gangsters, but his spirit is captured by a scientist who revives him as a ghost. As a ghost, Michael can possess and control other characters to help him in his quest for revenge.
The gameplay of "Avenging Spirit" revolves around possessing different characters, each with their own abilities, to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. By possessing an enemy, the player can use their specific abilities to advance in the game. However, possession is temporary, and the player must find new hosts before their ghostly energy runs out.
The game features a total of six stages, each with its own scenario and boss. The stages range from urban streets and sewers to a haunted house and a military base. Throughout the game, players must collect coins to increase their ghost energy and find special items that enhance their abilities.
The title received positive reviews upon its release for its innovative possession mechanics and engaging gameplay. It was praised for its unique concept and challenging level design. The Game Boy version of the game is considered a faithful adaptation of the original arcade version, which was released a year earlier in 1991.
Since its release, Avenging Spirit has gained fans and is considered one of the hidden gems of the Game Boy library. Retro gaming enthusiasts still remember it fondly for its creative gameplay mechanics and engaging story.
This port is not up to par with the arcade version but has excellent porting quality to Nintendo's handheld which was limited in color (being monochrome), hardware and sound, although there were positive things about the game its quality was very good for the time.

Music
Although the audio capabilities of the Game Boy were limited compared to modern systems, it did include some catchy tunes. Its composer Takahiro Ogata was the one who ported the entire original soundtrack to Nintendo's handheld. The music arranger is programmer Yutaka Sakashita, who adapted it to the console's chip.
Avenging Spirit's soundtrack consisted of several themes that matched the game's mysterious and action-packed atmosphere. It mixed catchy tunes, fast rhythms and haunting melodies. The game's main theme, which played during the title screen and in some levels, was memorable and energetic, and set the tone for the game.
During intense moments or boss battles, the music became more intense and pressing, creating a sense of urgency and excitement. Conversely, some stages or zones had more atmospheric and ambient themes, which enhanced the mysterious and ghostly elements of the game.
To listen to the music of Avenging Spirit, I recommend that you search for videos of the game or the official soundtrack on the Internet. You can find videos or websites where you can listen to the music and enjoy the nostalgic melodies of this Game Boy classic.
