American McGee's Alice in Japanese (アメリカン・マギーのアリス - Amerikan magī no Arisu), in Korean (아메리칸 맥기의 앨리스 - Amelikan maeggiui aelliseu), in Russian (Элис Американ МакГи), in chinese (美国麦基的爱丽丝 - Ailisi Mengyou Xianjing) and Hebrew (אליס של מקגי האמריקאית), is an action-adventure video game developed by Rogue Entertainment, licensed by developer American McGee and published by Electronic Arts in 2000 for Windows 32 in most of the world with different voice and general language translations. The game is based on Lewis Carroll's famous novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but with a darker and more sinister perspective, and with the protagonist, Alice, as a young girl traumatized by the death of her family in a fire, who is committed to a mental asylum.
It was developed to be compatible with Windows 95, 98, ME and 2000 operating systems, so it can run on 32-bit versions of Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 using backwards compatibility. Although in Windows 64 it is very incompatible due to loss of features, this starts from Windows 8 up to Windows 11 where it suffers architecture incompatibilities. The game uses the id Tech 3 game engine, which was used by other popular games of the time such as Quake III Arena and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
The game engine allows a high level of graphical detail, with detailed environments and well-designed characters, well-designed effects, interesting animation details and a very elaborate use of perspective, puzzles that were very complex but made a very important experience to the game as it was very dark and mature atmosphere. The game's story follows the protagonist, Alice, who after losing her family in a fire, is placed in a mental asylum. There, her mental health deteriorates and she begins to experience increasingly disturbing nightmares.
One day, Alice is visited by a strange figure who takes her back to the World of Wonders, but this time the place is full of grotesque and sinister creatures. The protagonist discovers that the Queen of Hearts has taken control of the World of Wonders and has turned it into a dark and dangerous place. Alice realizes that she is the only one who can free the World of Wonders from the Queen of Hearts' control and sets out on an adventure full of dangers and challenges to regain her sanity and save the World of Wonders.
During her adventure, Alice must face fierce enemies, solve puzzles and unravel the secrets hidden in the World of Wonders. As she delves deeper into this shadowy world, she uncovers chilling details about her past and her family. The game features third-person gameplay that focuses on combat, exploration and puzzle solving. Players must use special abilities, such as jumping and swimming, to overcome obstacles and defeat enemies. Throughout the game, players can also collect items and weapons to upgrade their arsenal.
American McGee is an American game designer who has worked in the video game industry for over 25 years, having collaborated with Id Software on games such as Doom, Quake and Quake II. The idea in mind behind the game was to create a darker, more sinister version of Lewis Carroll's fairy tale that reflected the disturbed mental state of the protagonist, Alice. After the game's release, McGee worked on several projects, including the development of the sequel to American McGee's Alice, called Alice: Madness Returns, which was released in 2011.
The game was very well received by critics and fans, and became a cult classic. It also had a sequel titled "Alice: Madness Returns", released in 2011 for multiple platforms, including Windows 32. It is important to note that because the game was released in 2000, it can be difficult to find for purchase in physical format and may require some configuration on modern operating systems to run properly.

Chris Vrenna, who is also known for his work in bands such as
Nine Inch Nails and
Marilyn Manson, wrote the song. The game's soundtrack is famous for its somber and melancholic atmosphere, reflecting the sinister and fantastic tone of the
American McGee's Wonders universe. Singer
Jessicka did the original vocals but with the help of guitarist
Mark Blasquez on the original soundtrack.
Most of the game's soundtrack is instrumental, with ambient tracks and themes playing at important plot points. The main tracks feature piano and strings with electronic sound effects added to evoke tension and danger.
The game includes several licensed music tracks from artists such as Jane Siberry, Roberta Williams and Donovan, in addition to the original soundtrack. These suggestions are used at particular points to highlight the story and the emotions of the characters, while helping to establish the mood and setting of the game.
It is widely regarded as one of the best video game soundtracks of all time. The game's soundtrack was well received by critics and gamers alike. Fans of American McGee's Alice often recall the game's songs as a crucial part of the bleak and surreal atmosphere the game manages to create.
The atmosphere of the game is significantly influenced by the SFX section. Sound effects are used in the game to emphasize the ominous and sinister aspects of the world of Wonderland, as well as to heighten the tension and suspense in the game's action and exploration scenes.
The game features ambient sound effects that help set the mood for the various environments, as well as sound effects for Alice's weapons and special abilities.
For example, you can hear the sound of rivers flowing and waves crashing against rocks in areas of the game where there is water. Players can hear the sounds of shadowy creatures and Alice's screams when she is injured in areas where there are enemies.
When it comes to how the game uses sound, the soundtrack is also crucial. To evoke tension and danger, ambient sound effects are combined with the game's music. When there is a lot of action, music, gunshots and explosions combine to create a chaotic and desperate atmosphere.
