Akito Takeuchi is the unofficial name of the sound driver used in Sunsoft's NES games. The driver was originally created by Akito Takeuchi, then upgraded by Naohisa Morota to use DPCM samples and other effects.

Release History

The first game to use Akito's sound driver was Super Arabian, and the last game being Honoo no Doukyuuji: Dodge Danpei 2, both Japan-exclusive titles. However, the driver was used in many North American and European games such as Journey to Silius, Spy Hunter, Batman, and U-four-ia. Naohisa Morota's name started to appear when the driver started using drums on the square channel, and using the DPCM channel. Any games from that point that credited sound programming attributed it to him instead of Akito.

Inventor stole this sound driver and used in own NES games and some advanced hacks. This driver also used by Dragon Co. in one game, The Lion King V: Timon & Pumbaa.

Output

Akito's sound driver originally output to the RP2A03, using percussion on not just the noise channel, but also the square channel. In the later years, the sound driver was upgraded to use both an FM and slap bass on the DPCM channel (as well as drums for Batman), which is probably what the sound driver is best known for. In Sunsoft's Famicom Disk System games, the driver would also take advantage of the RP2C33 channel.

Games

Some of these games appear to have the same sound code as Sunsoft's driver, but were developed by different companies (mainly TOSE). These games will have a '?' in the Sample box until they can be verified.
