Aircraft Carrier
Composer Miki Higashino
Released 1985-02-02
Title Origin Official
Loops Yes

"Aircraft Carrier" is the boss theme for the original Gradius (known as Nemesis overseas), first released on February 2, 1985. It was composed by Miki Higashino, but it has been rearranged by many other composers for other games in the series (as well as related Konami series like Parodius and Otomedius).

Title

Official soundtracks consistently call the original version of the song "Aircraft Carrier." Subsequent arrangements sometimes use different titles, ranging from relative generic ones (often a variant of "Gradius 1 Boss BGM") to names more fitting to their in-game context.

Composition

The song's composition is very simple and brief. After a short introduction consisting of an upward glissando, a single loop lasts for four measures, staying in a major key throughout. Later arrangements often add more instruments or entirely new melodies to make the song less repetitive, but they rarely stray very far from this core.

The original version of the song accompanies every boss fight in the game. It was written for the Bubble System's sound hardware (including two AY-3-8910s and a K005289 SCC) - while the game was later re-released as a regular ROM, the new hardware makes use of the same chips.

While Miki Higashino has not explicitly said whether she arranged her own compositions for the game, this interview with her suggests that it was common practice at Konami in the 1980s and 1990s - she speaks generally about "trying to overcome the limitations of the sound systems [Konami's sound staff] worked with" at one point.

Miki Higashino revisited the song when composing Salamander (the original version of the game). Its sound hardware utilizes a YM2151 chip and K007232 PCM. This arrangement plays during the sixth and final stage, as the player fights three Big Cores in succession. It adds a bass line to the original but is otherwise very similar.

Life Force, a later version, does not alter the song in any way.

The sequel to Gradius features a new arrangement of the song for the Twin 16's sound hardware (including a YM2151 and K007232). It plays during the first two bosses in the seventh stage (a boss rush), both of which are taken from the original Gradius. This version sounds significantly punchier than the original, with a more prominent bass and a regularly-sounding percussion sample.

The fourth stage, a boss rush exclusively featuring bosses from previous games in the series, plays an arrangement of "Aircraft Carrier" twice: once during its first boss and again during the last boss (both of which come from the original game). Gradius III has two separate versions of the song, both arranged for the YM2151 and K007232 sound chips. The first plays during the first portion of the final stage's boss rush - it features a heavily emphasized bassline and a strong percussion sample playing at regular intervals.

The second plays during the boss of a secret stage replicating the first level of the original Gradius. In keeping with the throwback, it is much closer to that game's arrangement and is therefore markedly simpler-sounding.

There are two separate versions of "Aircraft Carrier" in this game, both of which were arranged for its YM2151 and K053260 chips.

The first, titled "電飾コアのテーマ" (roughly meaning "Neon Core's Theme") on the official soundtrack, plays when fighting the sixth stage's boss (a variant of the Big Core from Gradius). This version has an entirely new opening and features some subtle melodies not present in the original.

The second, named "ゴルゴダ・タコのテーマ" ("Golgotha Octopus's Theme"), plays during the final boss fight (also based on the original Gradius equivalent). This version sticks closer to the original melody, albeit with the addition of drums.

The SNES port of Gradius III only retains one of the original version's arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier," used for the first portion of the eighth stage's boss rush. When compared to the arcade rendition, this arrangement lacks the impactful bass line (though it does replicate the original percussion sample).

Released 1994-04-??

As with its predecessor, Fantastic Journey (or Gokujou Parodius in Japan) plays an arrangement of "Aircraft Carrier" for two separate bosses as a call-back to Gradius: the fourth stage's Traffic Core and the final boss. Unlike its predecessor, both fights use the same song (titled "わたしの足をおなめ!" - literally "Lick My Feet!" - on the official soundtrack). This version uses the Konami GX system's sound hardware, including a TMS57002 from Texas Instruments and 2 of Konami's own K054539 chips.

Much like Parodius Da!, there are two separate arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier" in this game - one used for the first boss in a boss rush and one for the final boss. Both are given names in the game's official soundtrack.

"ジャンジャンバリバリ出血大サービス" (roughly "The Non-Stop Clattering of a Bargain Sale," popularly translated as "The Pachinko Payout Comes Fast and Furious") sounds much like the Super Famicom version of "Lick My Feet!" - a rendition of "Aircraft Carrier" that adds some extra flourishes but otherwise stays close to the original.

"オーバー・ザ・オクトパス" ("Over the Octopus") has a new opening modeled on traditional Japanese music. After the intro, however, it is exactly the same as "The Non-Stop Clattering of a Bargain Sale." (Interestingly, the official soundtrack attributes this specific version to Gradius III instead of the original Gradius.)
