Aircraft Carrier
Aircraft Carrier | ||||||||

"Aircraft Carrier" is the boss theme for the original Gradius (known as Nemesis overseas), first released on February 2, 1985. It was composed by Miki Higashino, but it has been rearranged by many other composers for other games in the series (as well as related Konami series like Parodius and Otomedius).

Official soundtracks consistently call the original version of the song "Aircraft Carrier." Subsequent arrangements sometimes use different titles, ranging from relative generic ones (often a variant of "Gradius 1 Boss BGM") to names more fitting to their in-game context.
Composition
The song's composition is very simple and brief. After a short introduction consisting of an upward glissando, a single loop lasts for four measures, staying in a major key throughout. Later arrangements often add more instruments or entirely new melodies to make the song less repetitive, but they rarely stray very far from this core.
Games
Nemesis (ARC)
Nemesis (ARC) | ||||
|
The original version of the song accompanies every boss fight in the game. It was written for the Bubble System's sound hardware (including two AY-3-8910s and a K005289 SCC) - while the game was later re-released as a regular ROM, the new hardware makes use of the same chips.
While Miki Higashino has not explicitly said whether she arranged her own compositions for the game, this interview with her suggests that it was common practice at Konami in the 1980s and 1990s - she speaks generally about "trying to overcome the limitations of the sound systems [Konami's sound staff] worked with" at one point.
Gradius (NES)
Gradius (NES) | ||||||
|
The NES version sounds sparser than the original, a necessary compromise for the console's weaker sound hardware. It is also noticeably lower-pitched.
Life Force (ARC)
Life Force (ARC) | ||||
|
Miki Higashino revisited the song when composing Salamander (the original version of the game). Its sound hardware utilizes a YM2151 chip and K007232 PCM. This arrangement plays during the sixth and final stage, as the player fights three Big Cores in succession. It adds a bass line to the original but is otherwise very similar.
Life Force, a later version, does not alter the song in any way.
Gradius (PC88)
Gradius (PC88) | ||||
|
This port of Gradius arranges the song for the PC-8801 mk. II SR family's YM2203 chip. This version is slower than the original, though it is otherwise a faithful conversion.
Gradius (MSX)
Gradius (MSX) | ||||
|
The MSX version of the song utilizes the system's native AY-3-8910 chip. This arrangement is slightly lower-pitched than the original and omits some of the background harmonies.
Gradius (X1)
Gradius (X1) | ||||
|
While later X1 models supported FM music, this version of Gradius plays all its music through the AY-3-8910 PSG even if the necessary hardware is installed.
Gradius (X68)
Gradius (X68) | ||||
|
This version of the song was arranged for the X68000's YM2151 and OKI MSM6258 chips. It is significantly more accurate to the original arcade music than any other contemporary ports.
Life Force (NES)
Life Force (NES) | ||||||
|
Life Force on NES also uses the song during the sixth stage's mini-boss (a different take on the Big Core than the original game). This arrangement has an added percussion line (like its arcade counterpart) and a slight echo effect.
Vulcan Venture (ARC)
Vulcan Venture (ARC) | ||||
|
The sequel to Gradius features a new arrangement of the song for the Twin 16's sound hardware (including a YM2151 and K007232). It plays during the first two bosses in the seventh stage (a boss rush), both of which are taken from the original Gradius. This version sounds significantly punchier than the original, with a more prominent bass and a regularly-sounding percussion sample.
Nemesis 3: The Eve of Destruction (MSX)
Nemesis 3: The Eve of Destruction (MSX)
|
The fourth stage, a boss rush exclusively featuring bosses from previous games in the series, plays an arrangement of "Aircraft Carrier" twice: once during its first boss and again during the last boss (both of which come from the original game). This arrangement uses the MSX's built-in AY-3-8910 chip alongside Konami's custom K051649 SCC.
Salamander (X68)
Salamander (X68) | ||||
|
The X68000 version of Salamander is very accurate to the original arcade game, including this song (arranged for the YM2151 and OKI MSM6258 sound chips).
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou (FC)
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou (FC)
|
Just like in the original version of Gradius II, "Aircraft Carrier" plays during the first two bosses of the seventh stage's boss rush. This arrangement for Famicom hardware retains the punchiness of its arcade counterpart.
Gradius III (ARC)
Gradius III (ARC) | ||||
|
Gradius III has two separate versions of the song, both arranged for the YM2151 and K007232 sound chips. The first plays during the first portion of the final stage's boss rush - it features a heavily emphasized bassline and a strong percussion sample playing at regular intervals.
The second plays during the boss of a secret stage replicating the first level of the original Gradius. In keeping with the throwback, it is much closer to that game's arrangement and is therefore markedly simpler-sounding.
Nemesis (GB)
Nemesis (GB) | ||||

An arrangement for the DMG-CPU B's PSG plays during the mini-boss fights in the first two stages, as well as the fight against the Super Big Core at the end of the first stage. This version is modeled on the original Gradius arrangement.

There are two separate versions of "Aircraft Carrier" in this game, both of which were arranged for its YM2151 and K053260 chips.
The first, titled "電飾コアのテーマ" (roughly meaning "Neon Core's Theme") on the official soundtrack, plays when fighting the sixth stage's boss (a variant of the Big Core from Gradius). This version has an entirely new opening and features some subtle melodies not present in the original.
The second, named "ゴルゴダ・タコのテーマ" ("Golgotha Octopus's Theme"), plays during the final boss fight (also based on the original Gradius equivalent). This version sticks closer to the original melody, albeit with the addition of drums.
Parodius (NES)
Parodius (NES) | ||||
|
The NES port of Parodius Da! omits the original game's sixth stage but retains its final boss, bringing its arrangement of "Aircraft Carrier" along with it. It downplays the arcade version's percussion slightly but is otherwise very similar.
Gradius III (SNES)
Gradius III (SNES) | ||||
|
The SNES port of Gradius III only retains one of the original version's arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier," used for the first portion of the eighth stage's boss rush. When compared to the arcade rendition, this arrangement lacks the impactful bass line (though it does replicate the original percussion sample).
Parodius (GB)
Parodius (GB) | ||||
|
Both "Neon Core's Theme" and "Golgotha Octopus's Theme" receive new arrangements for this port. Unlike the original arcade game, both versions of the song sound very similar to each other on the DMG-CPU B's PSG - the only difference is the intro in "Neon Core's Theme".

"Neon Core's Theme" and "Golgotha Octopus's Theme" reappear in this port. The arrangements for the computer's YM2151 and OKI MSM6258 both use slightly different instruments than the originals in places.
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (SNES)
|
The Legend of the Mystical Ninja features a mini-game replicating the first stage of the original Gradius, including its boss and the accompanying music. This arrangement hews closely to the bleepy sound of the original song but features a more prominent bassline.
Gradius (PCE)

This game's arrangement (for the HuC6280) features drums not present in the original.

This arrangement plays in the same context as the original arcade game. The song is largely the same on the YM2151 and OKI MSM6258.

As Neon Core and Golgotha Takobee both appear in this port, their respective themes do as well. Much like the original game, "Neon Core's Theme" has an additional background melody that "Golgotha Octopus's Theme" lacks.
Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy (SNES)
Parodius: Non-Sense Fantasy (SNES)

The SNES version of the game preserves the arcade game's two arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier," now rearranged for the console's S-SMP chip. "Neon Core's Theme" has a more prominent background harmony than the original, while "Golgotha Octopus's Theme" instead emphasizes the counter-melody.
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou (PCCD)
Gradius II: Gofer no Yabou (PCCD)

The PC Engine CD port of Gradius II plays a version of "Aircraft Carrier" that sounds largely like the original arcade version, but with higher-quality samples.
Fantastic Journey (ARC)
Fantastic Journey (ARC)

As with its predecessor, Fantastic Journey (or Gokujou Parodius in Japan) plays an arrangement of "Aircraft Carrier" for two separate bosses as a call-back to Gradius: the fourth stage's Traffic Core and the final boss. Unlike its predecessor, both fights use the same song (titled "わたしの足をおなめ!" - literally "Lick My Feet!" - on the official soundtrack). This version uses the Konami GX system's sound hardware, including a TMS57002 from Texas Instruments and 2 of Konami's own K054539 chips.

"Lick My Feet!" plays in the same context as the arcade game. Aside from having a more prominent bassline throughout the song, it is not very different from that version's arrangement.

Much like Parodius Da!, there are two separate arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier" in this game - one used for the first boss in a boss rush and one for the final boss. Both are given names in the game's official soundtrack.
"ジャンジャンバリバリ出血大サービス" (roughly "The Non-Stop Clattering of a Bargain Sale," popularly translated as "The Pachinko Payout Comes Fast and Furious") sounds much like the Super Famicom version of "Lick My Feet!" - a rendition of "Aircraft Carrier" that adds some extra flourishes but otherwise stays close to the original.
"オーバー・ザ・オクトパス" ("Over the Octopus") has a new opening modeled on traditional Japanese music. After the intro, however, it is exactly the same as "The Non-Stop Clattering of a Bargain Sale." (Interestingly, the official soundtrack attributes this specific version to Gradius III instead of the original Gradius.)

"The Non-Stop Clattering of a Bargain Sale" and "Over the Octopus" return in this port, now arranged with CD-quality sound.
Both songs feature more noticeable percussion, a horn section, and an orchestral hit that sounds before every loop, among other additions. "Over the Octopus" also features a new difference aside from its opening: a slap bass that plays throughout the track.
Jikkyou Oshaberi Parodius: Forever with Me (PS1)

The PS1 version of the game features the same arrangements of "Aircraft Carrier" as the Saturn port.

The boss of the fifth stage is accompanied by a rendition of "Aircraft Carrier" that the official soundtrack names "ですとろいざキャンディー" (an unusual way of writing "Destroy the Candy" in Japanese). This arrangement has a driving percussion line and begins adding frequent orchestral hit samples after a couple loops. Just like Gokujou Parodius, the game uses Konami's GX system, including a TMS57002 and 2 K054539 chips handling the audio.

"Leo! Leo!" plays during the boss fight against the Vic Viper (the ship the player controls in the Gradius series).
