After Burner is a flight combat game originally released for arcades by Sega before arriving on the NES in 1989 by Tengen.

In the game, you pilot the F-14 Thunder Cat, dubbed by the box to be "the fastest, meanest set of wings ever to slice through the air." You go through 23 stages blasting bogies with your infinite-use machine gun or your limited-use missiles.

The NES version of the game received mixed reviews from critics. The Japanese Famicom version was developed by Sunsoft and is thought to be much superior.

Music

The game's soundtrack is ported from Hiroshi Kawaguchi's arcade score. An unknown person ported it over to the NES. While the arrangements are mostly spot on, the music sounds a bit hollow. This is partly due to the game's soundtrack not using the triangle channel. Because the game's sound effects don't use the triangle channel only, it's interesting how it was omitted. The arcade game already had a short soundtrack, and all but one song is carried over, as the song, "After Burner", is not included. Whoever did the arrangements did a good job, though you can still hear an off note or two every now and then.

The song titles are taken from the official soundtracks of the arcade version. The NES version has a music test that can be accessed via a cheat code, but all of the songs are named "Title" followed by a number.

Credits

(Source: Official soundtrack; Game lacks credits)

The game does not have credits. The ending screen stays until the player presses a button, where it then returns to the title screen.

Nothing about the game's code, graphics, or sound tie it to any known developer for the NES/Famicom. The only thing is that the sound driver's frequency registers match that of one used by Another; in particular, Shingen the Ruler (NES) and President no Sentaku (FC). These games credit Kazunaka Yamane, but he was not known to have arranged music. Shingen the Ruler credits a "Mr Aby Da", who may have done the arrangement/sound programming if this version of After Burner was developed by Another, but it is currently unknown.

Ripping NES music is an arduous process that is beyond the scope of this site. The music was recorded in NSFPlay Synthesia mod.

Audio Devices

The game uses the NES's RP2A03. The game uses a unique sound driver not used in any other game.
