Title Origin Official

Yankee Doodle is a common folk song amongst Anglo-Americans. The tune dates back to the Seven Years' War in the mid-1700s. It has become a popular patriotic song in the USA where it has even become the state anthem of Connecticut. The tune itself is traditional, but the published lyrics are generally attributed to Dr. Richard Shuckburgh.

The use of the song began as an insult to Colonial men, claiming they were so boorish that they would put feathers into their hats and think they were being as fashionable as a proper macaroni (a garish man of court).

Lyrics

Due to the folk nature of the song, a wide variety of lyrics exist. The lyrics as they are often taught to children today are:

Yankee Doodle went to town,
A-riding on a pony;
He stuck a feather in his hat,
And called it macaroni.

CHORUS
Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle dandy,
Mind the music and the step,
And with the girls be handy.
