Wai Wai Mahjong: Yukai na Janyuu-tachi is a Mahjong game developed and published by Video System in 1989.
Unlike traditional Mahjong which is played with four players, Wai Wai Mahjong is one-on-one. The player can choose one of twelve opponents from three different levels of classes. Each character has their own personality and occupation. The classes and opponents are as follows:
Beginner Class: Akina Nakanomori (Idol Singer), Kyoko Higashiyama (Policewoman), Taro Okayama (Artist), Elizabeth Kobayashi (Nun), Junya Nagashima (Baseball Player), Aryan Stopullo (F1 Racer).
Intermediate Class: Kazuyoshi Tagamori (Talent), Koji Ishinozaka (Teacher), Mikako Hitotsubashi (OL), Soshi Takeshita (Politician).
Expert Class: Hiroshi Kuruma (Moderator), Ironstein (Scientist).
The game is broken up into two modes: Normal Mode, and Elimination Mode. Normal Mode is an exhibition game where the player can play against any of the twelve opponents. Elimination Mode is the main mode of the game, in which the player must beat each opponent in each class. If they lose against any opponent, they are sent back to the beginning of that class. In Elimination Mode, the player can choose to play normally or with items, which can be purchased with the winnings from beating an opponent, though the game's manual suggests the player beat the game with the items turned off. In this mode, if the player successfully wins against all twelve opponents, then they will face the legendary Mahjong Hermit. If the player manages to beat them, then the game is won.
The game is for one-player only; understandable as it wouldn't be fair to see the other players' tiles. Because the game was never translated into English, a thorough understanding of Japanese and the rules of Mahjong are required to play this game. A sequel was released many years later for the Playstation, Wai Wai 3-nin Uchi Mahjong (PS1).

Wai Wai Mahjong is an earlier release in the PC Engine library, so the audio leaves a lot to be desired. The main theme is only about 20 seconds long, so it can easily get annoying after playing for an extended period of time. The only impressive tunes are the Results and Ending theme, that are catchy jazzy anthems, and are the longer songs of the game.

Neither the game nor the manual have credits. Video System released two other games for the PC Engine: Super Volleyball and Rabio Lepus Special. Both of these games credit Naoki Itamura, and are the first to do so. However, this game was released in 1989, and the other two games were released a year later, so verification should be made. Kouji Murata may have written the game's audio driver, but this should be verified. Kenji Okuda is credited in Super Volleyball as well, but most of his other credits were for sound effects, so he may have done audio work for this game as well.
