Vanguard is an early scrolling shooter. You pilot the Vanguard ship through several underground tunnels clogged with enemy ships. Each zone features different enemies and different natural hazards in the walls. Your goal is to reach the City of Mystery and destroy the final boss, Gond.
The Atari 8-bit port appears to be a hack of the Atari 5200 release of the same 1983 year, but only exists as a prototype. Fortunately, years later, someone was able to convert in into the ROM image, thus we are able to have a look on this port.

Music
Being a hack of the 5200 version, and sharing the same POKEY chip between the systems, both versions have almost the same soundtrack. However, Star Trek: The Motion Picture Theme (composed for the eponymous movie by Jerry Goldsmith), taken as intro to the game, was slightly re-arranged, probably to avoid getting sued for the copyright violation.
The melodic synthesizer tune of Vanguard's energy theme was also borrowed, this time from the soundtrack of Flash Gordon. In particular, it comes from the song "Vultan's Theme (Attack of the Hawk Men)", composed by Freddie Mercury of Queen. It was also altered a little during the process of porting from Atari 5200. However, most probably due to the poor quality of the music (two different pieces of music even sound like it's one actually, just arranged in a different way!), the authors of neither the first or the second tune ever tried to sue the developers.
