The Hunt For Red October is a game loosely based on the movie of the same name based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. Throughout the game, the player takes control of the Red October submarine and must fight their way through underwater turrets, smaller submarines and other enemies. The final level takes place in a side-scroller where sabotage has occurred on the submarine and the player must defuse all of the bombs before the time runs out. Even for its time, this game was still a bad game, as there was a better submarine simulator for the NES, Silent Service; The controls are bad, and the game's difficulty is just way too hard. Most players will never see anything past the second stage.

Music

While there are a few songs in the game, the only song you'll be hearing throughout most of the game is the music you hear when you're in the submarine underwater. This music tends to get very annoying because of this. Tania Smith wrote the music to this game and said that Beam Software wanted her to make the music sound like the movie and she did a good job at it too, as it uses the Soviet Anthem at the intro, the Star Spangled Banner at the end. But then the two annoying songs are the underwater levels and the final level. There's also a mission briefing song that sounds pretty good, but unfortunately, you won't get to hear it much.

Beam Software didn't put credits in their games often, but this one does contain credits, probably because the designers knew nobody would make it to the end. The credits only list the people who worked on the game and don't list their specific roles. Gavan Anderson didn't work on the music and only did the sound effects, most of which were used in Back to the Future II & III (NES), another game that Tania Smith composed.
