The Hunt For Red October is a game loosely based on the movie of the same name based on the novel of the same name by Tom Clancy. Throughout the game, the player takes control of the Red October submarine and must fight their way through underwater turrets, smaller submarines and other enemies. The final level takes place in a side-scroller where sabotage has occurred on the submarine and the player must defuse all of the bombs before the time runs out. Even for its time, this game was still a bad game, as there was a better submarine simulator for the NES, Silent Service; The controls are bad, and the game's difficulty is just way too hard. Most players will never see anything past the second stage.

While there are a few songs in the game, the only song you'll be hearing throughout most of the game is the music you hear when you're in the submarine underwater. This music tends to get very annoying because of this. Tania Smith wrote the music to this game and said that Beam Software wanted her to make the music sound like the movie and she did a good job at it too, as it uses the Soviet Anthem at the intro, the Star Spangled Banner at the end. But then the two annoying songs are the underwater levels and the final level. There's also a mission briefing song that sounds pretty good, but unfortunately, you won't get to hear it much.

The whole game's soundtrack consists of only five songs. The one you'll be hearing the most is the underwater theme which plays continuously throughout each level (besides the final level). According to composer Tania Smith, Beam had asked her to make the music sound like the movie. This was one of the first video games Tania worked on which explains the music's lack of quality, as she had to program the music in Music Macro Language using Brian Post's version of the Beam sound driver.

The game does contain two songs from the movie; The National Anthem of the Soviet Union and The Star Spangled Banner. There is also a mission briefing cutscene song, but since you probably won't live through the second level you'll probably only end up hearing it once in the game.

The Hunt for Red October was the first NES game by Beam Software to contain credits. Unfortunately, the developers' roles aren't listed and are just split up into sections. While Gavan Anderson is credited along with Tania Smith, he only created the sound effects. These sound effects would be heard in many other NES and Game Boy titles for years to come.
