The Adventures of Bayou Billy AKA Mad City is a multi-genre action game with a Southern bayou theme. You play Bayou Billy, whose girlfriend Annabelle has been kidnapped by a rich villain, and you must travel from your home in a remote swamp to his mansion in the city, all the while beating up his gang of thugs along the way.

Each game level is given one of three game play genres: a side-scrolling beat-em-up, combat driving, and a rail-shooter. In the beat-em-up mode, you progress to the right beating up assorted thugs and dangerous animals while finding various weapons to use. The combat driving sections require to to drive a Jeep quickly to each check point while shooting or avoiding enemy vehicles, planes, helicopters, and obstacles along the road. The rail shooter sections slowly move along while thugs shoot at you and thrown explosives your way. You must watch your supply of ammunition to stay alive. This section can be played with a controller or a Zapper depending on which game mode you select at the beginning of the game. Between each stage is a cut-scene of the villain taunting you.

Game reviewers have been especially critical of this game pointing out the monotony, extreme difficulty, generic plot. By splitting the game into three distinct genres, the developers were unable to make any of them particularly impressive, so they suffer from monotony. Also, poor game control makes the game exceptionally difficult. And of course, even in 1988, a plot consisting of "save your girlfriend from the villain" was quite tired.

Like most of Konami's big named games, The Adventures of Bayou Billy had decent music for its day including several nice upbeat tunes. The intro cut scene has a sound quality that you wouldn't expect from an NES game, and the ending music is one of the best. The game also features surprisingly good speech for a title form 1988.

The titles and order of the music in the game is based off of the information from the internal sound test.

The composers were forced by Konami producers to use aliases. In order to give proper credit, we have contacted Atsushi Fujio who has given us the real names of the composers. Atsushi Fujio said that he did not compose the music but he arranged the music and data manipulation. For some reason, Jun Funahashi's credited in the USA release, but not the Japanese release. His name replaces Kiyohiro Sada's.

Tsutomu Ogura's English and Japanese alias strongly suggest that he had married, as "Shinkon" (新婚) is Japanese for "Newlywed".
