Space Quest: Chapter I - The Sarien Encounter is the first game in the Space Quest series of light-hearted science fiction adventure games. In the story, you play a lowly Janitor aboard a remote research vessel, the starship Arcada. A powerful item called the Star Generator has been created on the Arcada, and the Sariens attack and steal it. Since the Star Generator can be fashioned to make a powerful weapon, it's up to you, Roger Wilco, to save the day!

The player controls Roger Wilco by using the arrow keys or keyboard to move him around, and typing out commands such as "look at the alien" and "search the body". The player will have to spend a lot of time wandering around space ships and alien planets while using a bit if space gumption to figure out the various puzzles.

The title screen. I love games made by Two Guys From Andromeda!

Well that can't be a good sign.

Dead bodies are definitely not a good sign!

Trying to find a good computer game as the ship goes up in smoke.

This looks like a nice cantina to whet my whistle.

Although 'Space Quest has a fair amount of sound effects, it's short in the music department with a mere four tracks, three of which are "borrowed". The song played by ZZ Top is Sharp Dressed Man, the song played by the Blues Brothers is Otis Redding's I Can't Turn You Loose, and the song played by the little green men is the bass line for Too Much Time On My Hands, by Styx. The only original tune is the Space Quest Theme, but it's a very catchy tune.

Players who had a 3 voice chip heard better music than those with just a PC speaker. Both soundtracks have been recorded, tracks starting with a 1 are recorded from the Tandy 3 Voice chip, tracks starting with a 2 are recorded from the PC Speaker.

(Info)

The SND (Sierra) audio was ripped out of the resource files using AGI Studio 1.38b. Because there currently aren't any players that accurately support the 3 voice format, the music was recorded during game play through DOSBox emulating a Tandy 1000.

Tracks 1-59 are sound effects, while tracks 60-65 are music. The following tracks don't exist: 5, 16, 47-58, and 64.

Track 61 is a short jingle that is never played in the game.
