In Shadowgate you play the role of a courageous knight who must enter dreaded castle Shadowgate to stop an evil wizard from summoning the great Behemoth to destroy the world. Although the theme assumes an action genre, the game is a puzzle adventure that uses a point and click interface. Instead of hacking apart monsters you use cunning and common sense to make your way through the various rooms of the castle. You encounter various beasts, weapons, traps, magical spells, and strange devices. You can choose from several different actions like take, open, look, and use to manipulate the puzzles and items you find along the way.

The game features several nice tracks of haunting ambient music to fit its Gothic atmosphere. It can be assumed that [[Kouji Nishikawa]] wrote the music to Shadowgate since he wrote Déjà Vu's music for GBC which uses the same engine and music driver and also has credits, but since the game does not credits, the composer is unknown. There is a possibility the Japanese version's manual has credits. Also, track 13 of the NSF soundtrack doesn't seem to be played in the game. It may have been composed for the infamous Goblin Room that existed in several versions of the game, but was removed in the NES version. The track is titled Unknown in the Vorbis soundtrack.

Platform: NES
Year: 1989
Developer: ICOM Simulations, Inc., Kemco
Buy: Amazon

Shadowgate is a point-and-click game originally developed by Icom Simulations for the Macintosh and other various computers before eventually being ported to the NES by Kemco. In this game, you play the role of a courageous knight who must enter dreaded castle Shadowgate to stop an evil wizard from summoning the great Behemoth to destroy the world. Although it has an action adventure plot, the game is a puzzle adventure that uses a point and click interface. Like the other Icom point-and-click games, the game can get boring once you know how to beat the game and complete it several times, yet, there is still a little replay value since there are different methods you can use to complete various tasks.

The game features several nice tracks of haunting ambient music to fit its Gothic atmosphere. While the game doesn't have credits, Hiroyuki Masuno has claimed credit for composing the music, converting it to the NES, and programming the sound driver.

Track 13 of the NSF soundtrack doesn't seem to be played in the game. It may have been composed for the infamous Goblin Room that existed in several versions of the game, but was removed in the NES version.
