The SC 68000 format houses portions of software from games written for a platform that utilized a Motorola MC68000 CPU, specifically the Atari ST, Atari STE, and Amiga. Playback requires the emulation of several chips to achieve proper output. All three platforms need MC68000 emulation, but each other platform requires specialized chips. Atari ST playback requires emulation of the MFP 68901 for timing and the YM2149 for audio. Atari STE playback requires emulation of a Microwire for timing and the YM2149 for audio. Amiga playback requires emulation of the 8364 for audio.

SC68 also has header information that allows you to store meta data about the game, composer, and song timing.

While the SC68's highly-technical format allows for optimal configuration of the audio, it's complicated method of ripping music has caused the format to grow into obscurity and few new SC68 soundtracks have been ripped since 2003. Thankfully, Atari ST music continues to be ripped in the SNDH format, and some Amiga music is ripped in the CUST format.

All games released for the Atari ST, Atari STE, and Amiga platforms can be ripped to SC68.

How to Obtain

SC98 ripping requires an intimate knowledge of the YM2149, 8364, Motorola MC68000, MFP 68901, and Microwire chips. Luckily, most popular games have already had their soundtracks ripped to SC68 and can be downloaded:
