Puyo Puyo Tsuu is a port of the arcade puzzle game of the same name and a sequel to Puyo Puyo (GG). (The "tsuu" in the title is a pun -- the kanji means "expert" but is also pronounced like the English word "two.") It faithfully preserves the general structure of the original game, including the many ways it iterates on the original game.

Much like its predecessor, the aim of the game is to connect 4 or more Puyos (small blob creatures) of the same color as they drop down from above. The ideal way to play is to set up chain reactions where clearing one group of Puyos will cause another group to pop, and so on. Most modes pit the player against an opponent, and making chains there will send increasing amounts of "nuisance" Puyos to their board, clogging it up and hindering their own strategies. New to this installment is the ability to "offset" nuisance Puyos that are about to drop onto the board: making chains during that timeframe will decrease or even reverse them entirely, giving the would-be victim a fighting chance.

The structure of the game's single-player mode is remarkably different this time around: instead of linearly fighting opponents, Arle (the player character) must ascend a tower by earning a set amount of points throughout her battles. There are only so many enemies per floor, however, and failing to hit the point quota after getting through each and every one of them will result in failure.

Music

The Game Gear's sound hardware unsurprisingly limits the fidelity of this port's soundtrack, though every song from the original game made it in. Some songs are pitch-shifted slightly, but the overall compositions are essentially the same.

Recording

"It's the Game Over!" and "Victory of Puyo Puyo" have been omitted from this list, as they sound identical to the equivalents in Puyo Puyo (GG).

Puyo Puyo Tsuu DX. Complete Best Album 2 confirms that Tsuyoshi Matsushima composed most of the game's original songs - however, "Ending C" is not on the album, leaving open the possibility that Tomonori Minami may have co-composed it. Other tracks originate from previous games in the series:

  • "It's the Ending!" and "Stage Clear" respectively arrange "Open the Door" and "I Did It, Baby" from Madou Monogatari 1-2-3 (MSX2), which credits Toshiaki Sakoda, Masanobu Tsukamoto, and "Atarashi" for sound-related duties.
  • "Cooking of Puyo Puyo" comes from the first Puyo Puyo game (released for the MSX2, Famicom Disk System, and later the regular Famicom). The latter two versions credit Einosuke Nagao, Masaaki Harada, and Tsukamoto for its music - while the MSX2 version also credits Sakoda, the fact that he is only mentioned in that version alone (and that the same songs are used across every iteration of the game) suggests that he was not involved in the composing process.
  • "Warning of Puyo Puyo" and the unused "Victory of Puyo Puyo" are lightly arranged from Puyo Puyo (ARC) (and, by proxy, its Mega Drive port), which credits its music to Nagao and Tsukamoto.
