Power Punch II was intentionally a sequel to Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES) and originally titled Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch, but due to Tyson's incarceration, Beam Software was forced to remake the game, though both games use the George Foreman's KO Boxing (NES) engine, though some sprites and graphics have been slightly altered. The game was criticized heavily for its poor gameplay mechanics, as most who play this game with experience from Punch-Out!! will most likely never beat the first opponent, as the game suffers poor controls and unfair difficulty.

In this game, you take the role of a boxer named Mark Tyler who is known to be the best heavyweight champion in the world. Somehow, this gets the attention of intergalactic aliens who also happen to have heavyweight champions. Mark must defeat all of his alien opponents in order to keep his name as the world heavyweight champion.

Music

While the game is bad, the music isn't. Marshall Parker did a great job with the music. Some of the songs are different, though sound identical in the prototype version. The game doesn't have a lot of songs for its time and there's only one theme for everything, so the music can get to the player, even though it's well-composed. Marshall had to write the music in Music Macro Language. The credits are a little different in each version. In Power Punch II, Gavan Anderson is listed for the music, but in the prototype version, he is listed as a special thanks mention. This is because Gavan didn't actually compose the music, but he did all of the sound effects.
